Bases are just carry rules
- Base 10 carries at ten; base 2 carries at two; base 16 carries at sixteen
- Hex digits run 0-9 then a-f; one hex digit is exactly four bits
- That 4-to-1 packing is why programmers love hex: it's binary, abbreviated
Hex in the wild
- #ff0000 is a hex color: two digits each of red, green, blue
- ff is 255, the loudest a channel goes
- MAC addresses, memory dumps, and color pickers all speak hex
- Read ff9900 out loud: full red, medium green, no blue: orange
